First of All: What is a fashion copywriter?
A professional writer who specializes in writing about fashion and style.
It can cover various tasks like writing press releases, blog posts or anything involving text.
Fashion designers, fashion magazines, and other fashion-related businesses often employ fashion copywriters to create marketing and promotional materials.
The good part is that as a fashion copywriter, you can work for a company or become a freelancer and work from wherever you want.
Any business in the fashion industry that requires text needs a fashion copywriter.
If you do some simple research, you will see plenty of jobs in the fashion industry too!
As a fashion copywriter, you need to write about the latest trends in fashion and describe clothing and accessories in a way that will appeal to readers.
If you love fashion, writing about it will be a piece of cake, but it still requires some skills.
What skills are needed to be a fashion copywriter?
Skills are usually learned by experience, and experience comes with practice.
As a copywriter, you might not need to have all the below skills, but it will help you adapt to any work environment.
If you want to become a successful fashion copywriter, or maybe your business wants to hire one, here are some of the skills to look for:
- Have a good knowledge and understanding of the fashion industry
How can you write about fashion when you are not up to date with the latest trends and industry news?
With vast industry knowledge, you can write compelling copy that resonates with the readers.
- Write well and have good attention to detail.
Writing well means that your readers will be able to understand you better, and attention to detail will make your work’s quality outstanding.
In the fashion copywriting industry, you will have lots of competition and need to differentiate your content writing.
- Work well under pressure and meet deadlines.
This is because the fashion industry is fast-paced and competitive.
As a fashion copywriter, you will not always work under pressure, but it’s good to adapt. If you want to be successful in this industry, sometimes you need to be able to produce high-quality work quickly and efficiently.
- Research capabilities
While extensive knowledge is excellent, being able to search for new fashion trends and resources is one of the most required skills in the fashion copywriting industry.
What type of content does a fashion copywriter create?
A fashion copywriter is responsible for creating content that promotes and sells fashion products and has a strong understanding of the latest trends and how to appeal to their target audience.
How does the above translate to the type of content that you write? Here are some of the things that you should expect as a copywriter:
- Blog posts
- Social media posts
- Press releases
- Product descriptions
- Category descriptions
- Website pages content
- Text, image or video ad campaigns
While it might look overwhelming, you do not need to know about all these topics.
It would be best to specialise in a particular category: maybe you like to write long-form content, perhaps social media is what you know best, and so on.
Start niche and remain niche or expand your knowledge if you want to become a better copywriter.
PROs and CONs of becoming a fashion copywriter
Fashion, like any other industry, has its own positive and negative things.
Let’s start with the PROs:
- Work in a creative and ever-changing environment
- Be invited to different fashion shows
- Be able to work from anywhere
- Create your own content-writing business.
- You can find lots of roles on various job boards like Indeed.
CONs
- It might be overwhelming to keep up to date with the latest trends.
- Fashion copywriting can be a very competitive field, and it can be challenging to break into
- As a fashion copywriter, you often have to work long hours, including nights and weekends, but this is not a sure thing.
Where can you find jobs as a fashion copywriter?
Indeed
While Indeed is one of the best job boards in the world, and you can find various jobs, the below methods are some of my preferred ways to find copywriting jobs.
If you do not have a LinkedIn profile, you should create one.
There are many jobs there, but it requires a bit of knowledge about finding them.
The easiest way would be to go into the job boards tab and search for a job from your region, but there is another way.
Click on the main search, enter a term like “fashion copywriter” or “remote fashion copywriter”, and then look inside the posts.
You will find a lot of gems from companies and recruiters who posted that they are looking for a fashion copywriter to help with their web content, product descriptions, etc.
Of course, you can find jobs on Google, but let me explain a better way.
First, put this search term into the Google search bar
site:workable.com fashion copywriter
After you see the results, use the Tools tab and select the time as past week or past 24 hours.
You can also replace workable.com with lever.co or greenhouse.io.
Why does this work?
Workable, Lever and Greenhouse are HR tools which help companies create jobs.
Each company will get its page, and once they post a job, Google will index it, and the jobs will be visible on the company’s career pages.
Sometimes these jobs are not even posted anywhere.
Do you need a fashion copywriter for your business?
The short answer is yes, but it depends.
If you are looking to create professional content for a fashion blog or website, it will help to ensure that the content is well-written and engaging.
Additionally, if you plan to launch a new fashion line or collection, a copywriter can assist with creating marketing and advertising materials.
Finally, a copywriter can be a valuable resource if you are seeking to write a book about fashion or create other fashion-related content.
As you can see, in most situations where your business requires a different copy, from product descriptions to total fashion posts, a fashion copywriter will significantly help.
If you are on a budget, different copy tools can help you write better.
When you start a business, you are supposed to have the most knowledge about it.
You do not need to write perfectly, and I suggest creating a blog and writing articles about what your fashion business sells.
But what if you do not want to write and need a professional that can help you with your content?
Where can you find fashion copywriters for your business?
Upwork
Create an account, post a copywriting job and wait for people to apply.
Fiverr
Fiverr is similar to Upwork, but usually, the way it works is once you have an account, search for copywriters with different skills, contact them, and if they can help with your requirements, you place an order.
Unfortunately, recently I noticed that on Fiverr, it’s a bit difficult to find good copywriters.
ProBlogger
They have a job board where you can post your copywriting job for free, in a similar way as you would on Upwork.
